The history in Rio Grande do Sul, a state southernmost in Brazil, is famous for its wars between the Portuguese and Spanish. The "Missions" were the great dream of the Spanish Jesuits that fought and lost to the "Bandeirantes", which were adventurers from São Paulo who chased Indians to be used as wokforce.

However the Spanish Jesuits came back in 1860 and managed to give a high quality education, where some Indians became farmers, sculptures and musicians. Unfortunately the did not resist to the contend between the Portuguese and the Spanish, and at last, when the two countries made piece and the lands were given to the Portuguese, the "Guarani" Indians fought to death. It is still possible to see the ruins of this "dream" in the city of "Santo Ângelo". This very state has in its capital – Porto Alegre – a cosmopolitan city with a wide variety of culture and gastronomic options. It is impossible to visit Porto Alegre without trying out its excellent caw, sheep, chicken or pig barbecue. The state also offers a seaside that is similar to the European one, where in the summer the tourists show up in their thousands and in the winter, because of the cold weather, they become empty. It is also worth knowing the city of "Gramado", where one can easily see the strong German and Italian cultural influence. This city holds the most important cinema festival in Latin America: the Gramado Festival.
