Towards the southeast of the State, in the region of "São Raimundo Nonato", were found vestiges of the oldest man in the America and 35 archaeological sites of the region have already been classified to help in the development of studies on appearance and the way of living of the old inhabitants' of the continent. The attractiveness of the north of the State are the rocky formations, in the National Park "Sete Cidades", with vestige of other civilizations, even Egyptian and Phoenician. The colonization of Piauí made some mistakes with the arrival of the cattle breeding. This State had already been the second greatest cattle producer of the country and what one can see in the beautiful fields of "Campo Maior" region, only 86 km far from "Teresina", the capital, where the cattle and the cattlemen cohabit in total harmony. When one arrives to the coast, small in size - with 66 km - but of great beauty, the visitor is fascinated by the wild beaches, by the simple life of the fishermen, by the wealth of the typical kitchen whose specialities are based on shellfishes, fish and the juices of typical local fruits such as "sapoti", "murici" and "bacuri". The coast is even richer in lagoons, "igarapés", dunes and swamps. The "Lagoa do Portinho", in "Parnaíba", stands out among so many in the region the region. Its dark waters surrounded by enormous dunes of white sands are an invitation for the rest. The sunset is fantastic. The visitors can enjoy exciting rides on jet-ski, boats or long walks in the dunes. The craft of Piauí is rich and varied, mainly in Parnaíba, with its bobbin lace (fabric of handmade fine and delicate threads), true works of art, the ornamental ceramic, the texture, the objects made of fiber and straw and the wooden sculptures. The Delta of the "Parnaíba" river is the greatest sanctuary of Piauí, formed for more than 80 islands and islets, composing today one of the main tourist points of the region.
