South Coast |
| If this photo
matches with your idea of paradise in earth, congratulations: you are not
alone. The small bay of "Calhetas"
is surrounded by rocks that separate it from its neighboring beaches
"Gaibu" and "Paraiso". "Calhetas" has calm
and crystalline waters that go deep quickly, giving to the sea a bluish
coloration of unique beauty. The anchored fishing boats, swinging
sluggishly with the waves, give even more placidness to the scenery. Just
sit under the shade of the coconut trees and relax: there is no reason for
hurry, the landscape has been the same since centuries... You can also climb the surrounding rocks in order to visit the neighboring beaches. In this case, don't forget the visit to the beach of "Paraíso" (paradise), the scenery is simply astonishing! |

Prepare
your camera: from the belvedere of the Cabo
de Santo Agostinho it is possible to
see since the city of Recife until the harbor of Suape, including the
neighboring beaches of Paiva, Gaibu, Calhetas and Paraiso. But even more
impressive is the blue-turquoise color of the sea. |

The curious name ("Porto de Galinhas" means hens harbor) comes of the colonial past: after the prohibition of the traffic of slaves, slave ships used to arrive in the beach in secret, and the secret code to call the slaves buyers was " There are new hens in the harbor". Sad contradiction: the first vision of the land that would impose them the slavery was of a paradise! But let us leave the past aside: nowadays, 12Km of beaches - "Muro Alto", "Cupe", "Porto de Galinhas" and "Maracaipe" - welcome all that come to enjoy it. The reef barriers that protect the beach also form natural swimming pools with turquoise waters, incredibily transparent, where you can feed multicolored little fishes with pieces of bread or hedgehog. You do not need to be a disciple of Jacques Custeau to enjoy all of this: just rent diving glasses and snorkel in the near village, catch a raft to the swimming pools and enjoy it! And there are more swimming pools in "Muro Alto": to get there, just rent a buggy (kind of "beach style" off-road), believe me, the landscape is unforgetable. More to do? Sure there is: strolls of jet-ski, raft, windsurf, banana-boat, ketch, or simply go to swim in the warm, transparent waters. But if your supply of energy is endless, don't worry: the neighbouring beach of "Maracaípe" is unprotected by the reefs, therefore an excellent place for surfing. Indeed, Maracaipe hosts one of the stages of the Brazilian Surf championship. But save some energy for the night: in the near village there are excellent restaurants, don't to lose the chance to eat a "peixada". There is much to be spoken about Porto de Galinhas, but the best thing to do is: go there and see it with your own eyes! |
