Popular Festivals
Pernambuco is nationally known for its happiness, liveliness, irreverence and spontaneity. The people from Pernambuco are proud of their carnival and not only have a lot of fun, but also make sure their visitors are fully satisfied. The several beats are contagious, the costumes are very creative, the cities are deluged with light, music and colour. The carnival from Pernambuco really belongs to its people. From Recife to Olinda, from Petrolina, in the countryside, to Vitória de Santo Antão, only 80 kilometres far from the coast, everyone is involved in this popular festival. It does not really matter if the costume is of a king, queen or slave, what matters is, during the four days the carnival lasts, to keep the tradition of one of the most beautiful carnivals in the planet.
Galo da Madrugada: It is the biggest public event ever promoted by a "block" group of followers during carnival). It has got more than one million followers that turn the centre of Recife, on "Zé Pereira’s" Saturday, into a n immense outdoor ball – which deserved to be mentioned in the Guinness Book, 1995, as the biggest carnival block in the world. Recife becomes a colourful sea full of followers with their funny costumes and coming in their thousands to the streets, besides allegorical "lorries" and non-stop orchestras. The "Galo da Madrugada" was set up in 1977 as a small mask club and gathered just the neighbourhood of São José. They just wanted to revive the traditions of the clubs of frevo (our main beat) in Pernambuco. What is particular about the block is that the followers start to get together at 5.30 in the morning, still dark, from where comes the name "madrugada" which means dawn, time when the "galos" (cocks) wake up. As time went by, it became an astonishing success. Nowadays to cheer up the amazing crowd it is necessary more than thirty lorries with potent sound systems besides several allegorical "lorries".

The irreverence, creativity and happiness turned the Carnival in Olinda in one of the most famous in the world. Thousands of visitors come from all over the world every year to taste the beauty of the carnival which takes place all day long in the narrow slopes of Olinda. This city was given the title of Cultural Patrimony of the Humanity. One of the landmarks of the carnival in Olinda are the giant puppets which draw the attention of thousands of followers who keep dancing frevo all the time. Besides the puppets, more than 500 hundred officially registered carnival blocks make the liveliness of our carnival. Indeed, there are much more than 500 carnival "blocks" since we consider that lots of people spontaneously dress their costumes and arrange their own, non-official blocks. The several giant puppets give a special view to the carnival in Olinda. They are as tall as 3 metres and are carried in the cities slopes followed by thousands of people. The giant puppet from the Clube de Alegoria Homem da Meia Noite ( The Midnight Man Allegory Club), 1932, is one of the most famous of this great festival. He officially starts the carnival in Olinda at midnight on Saturday of "Zé Pereira". The "Midnight Man" remained single up to 1967when was set up the block A Mulher do Dia (The Day Woman). They are the city most loved couple during the carnival.
